The story follows Keitarō Gentōga, a college freshman who despises ghosts but unfortunately has a powerful knack for attracting spirits. A traumatic incident during middle school left a curse on his hand, causing him to become a shut-in (hikikomori) for two years before the series begins. Encouraged by his childhood friend, Eiko Hōzuki, he decides to re-enter society by becoming a private tutor. His first student is Eiko's brilliant and eccentric young cousin, Yayoi Hōzuki, a girl who is hell-bent on finding the malevolent spirit that kidnapped her mother's soul.

To reintegrate into society, he takes a job as a private tutor. His first student is , a child prodigy and the cousin of his childhood friend, Eiko. Yayoi has a unique physical trait—two pupils in each eye—allowing her to see spirits.
