Inside the One Bar, Mara notices patterns: contraband deliveries timed with staff rotations, rigged grievance outcomes, and fellow inmates disappearing after cooperating with certain guards. Using limited means — a smuggled phone, an empathetic corrections officer, coded messages with a neighboring inmate — Mara pieces together ties between privatized prison contractors, tech firms selling surveillance-as-a-service, and a powerful political donor profiting from forced labor.
