Like many of Bhansali's ambitious projects, the film was not without its share of controversy. The biggest issue revolved around the original title, "Ram-Leela." Several petitions were filed in courts across India, claiming that the title hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus by associating Lord Ram's "leela" (divine play) with a story of violence, sex, and vulgarity. The controversy led to the Allahabad High Court temporarily banning the film’s screening in Uttar Pradesh.
